MDP Bone Scan in Bangalore
About MDP Bone Scan
An MDP Scan (Methylene Diphosphonate Scan) is a nuclear medicine test that helps check the health of your bones. A small amount of a safe radioactive tracer is injected into your body, which travels to your bones and highlights problem areas.
This scan is used to detect:
- Bone infections
- Fractures
- Arthritis
- Bone cancer (metastases)
- Other bone diseases
It gives your doctor a clear picture of how your bones are working and helps catch issues early.
Why You Might Need an MDP Scan
Detect Bone Cancer Spread
Helps check if cancer from organs like the breast, prostate, or lungs has spread to the bones.
Find Bone Infections
Identifies infections like osteomyelitis by showing abnormal activity in bones.
Check Fractures or Injuries
How the Scan Works
A small dose of 99mTc-MDP is injected into a vein in your arm.
The tracer travels through your body and collects in your bones.
You lie down, and a special camera takes images of your bones.
The images are reviewed by a nuclear medicine doctor, and a report is sent to your referring doctor.
Before the Scan – How to Prepare
Stay well-hydrated before and after the scan. Drink at least 2–3 glasses of water after the injection to help flush the tracer from your body.
This improves image quality and reduces radiation exposure.
Let the doctor know in advance. Breastfeeding moms may need to pause feeding for up to 24 hours.
Take your regular medications unless told otherwise. Share your medical history with the team.
Carry any past scan reports, films, CDs, and the doctor’s prescription.
These can interfere with the scan.
