A Gastric Emptying Study is a nuclear medicine test that measures how quickly food leaves your stomach. The meal is mixed with a tiny amount of a safe radioactive tracer (Tc-99m Sulphur Colloid), and a gamma camera captures images at intervals.
It is commonly done for symptoms like bloating, early fullness, nausea, or vomiting—often associated with delayed stomach emptying (gastroparesis).

How to Prepare for a Gastric Emptying Study
Do not eat or drink anything for at least 4 hours before the scan.
You may be asked to stop medications that affect stomach movement (like domperidone, prokinetics, or anticholinergics) 24–48 hours before.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding
- You have diabetes or thyroid disorders (as they can affect gastric emptying)
- You have had previous stomach surgery
- If you’ve had an endoscopy, ultrasound, or other related tests, kindly bring them along.
