Safe. Accurate. Non-Invasive Test to Check Lung Blood Flow
MAA Lung Perfusion Scan in Bangalore
MAA Lung Scan
An MAA Lung Scan (also called a Lung Perfusion Scan) is a nuclear medicine test that checks blood flow (perfusion) in your lungs. It uses a small amount of a safe radioactive tracer called 99mTc-MAA (Technetium-labeled Macroaggregated Albumin) injected into your vein. A special gamma camera then takes images of the lungs to show how well blood is flowing.
This scan is mainly used to detect blood clots in the lungs (pulmonary embolism) and to assess lung function before surgery or in chronic lung diseases.
Why Is This Scan Done
Detect Pulmonary Embolism
Identifies blood clots that may block blood flow in the lungs.
Assess Lung Function
Evaluates how well different areas of the lungs are working.
Pre-Surgical Planning
Helps plan lung surgeries by showing functional areas of the lung.
Chronic Lung Conditions
Useful in COPD, pulmonary hypertension, and interstitial lung disease.
Monitor Treatment
Tracks progress after treatment for lung clots or surgery.
How Does the MAA Lung Scan Work
A tiny amount of tracer is injected into your vein. It travels to the lungs and temporarily lodges in small blood vessels.
The gamma camera captures images of the tracer distribution in the lungs.
Doctors analyze the images to detect any areas with reduced or absent blood flow.
The findings are compiled into a report to help guide diagnosis and treatment.
How to Prepare for an MAA Lung Scan
- No Special Fasting or Preparation Needed
- Continue Usual Medications unless instructed otherwise
- Inform if Pregnant or Breastfeeding
- Bring Previous Reports like CT scans or X-rays
- Wear Comfortable Clothing
Is It Safe for People With Kidney Issues ?
Unlike contrast CT scans the MAA scan is safe even if your kidney function is impaired or serum creatinine levels are elevated. The tracer does not harm the kidneys.
