A 99mTc-Pyrophosphate (PYP) scan is a specialized nuclear medicine test used to detect transthyretin (ATTR) cardiac amyloidosis — a condition in which abnormal proteins accumulate in the heart, causing stiffness and weakness. This scan is completely non-invasive and can help diagnose the disease without a biopsy, enabling early intervention and better long-term outcomes.

How Does the Scan Work
A small amount of Technetium-99m pyrophosphate (99mTc-PYP) is injected into a vein.
After injection, you wait for about 1 hour to 3 hour to allow the tracer to distribute in your body.
A special camera captures detailed images of your heart. In cardiac amyloidosis, the tracer binds to amyloid deposits in the heart muscle.
Uptake of the tracer is graded and compared to rib uptake to confirm ATTR cardiac amyloidosis.
A comprehensive report is provided to your cardiologist for diagnosis and further treatment planning.
How to Prepare
