Sestamibi Scan for Parathyroid Imaging in Bangalore

A Sestamibi scan is a nuclear medicine test used to locate overactive parathyroid glands (adenomas or hyperplasia). It uses a small amount of Technetium-99m Sestamibi tracer to identify abnormal tissue causing excess hormone production. It is particularly useful in primary hyperparathyroidism, enabling precise localization before surgery.

About Parathyroid Sestamibi Scan

A parathyroid Sestamibi scan is used to identify abnormal parathyroid glands causing elevated blood calcium levels. It detects parathyroid adenomas (most common), hyperplasia, ectopic glands, and persistent or recurrent disease after surgery. This non-invasive, highly accurate test supports precise localization and planning of minimally invasive surgery.

When Is a Parathyroid Sestamibi Scan Needed

Doctors may recommend this scan if:

  • Blood tests show high calcium levels

  • Parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels are elevated

  • Symptoms such as kidney stones, bone pain, fatigue, or osteoporosis are present

  • To localize a parathyroid adenoma before surgery

  • To detect recurrent hyperparathyroidism after previous surgery

How Does a Parathyroid Sestamibi Scan Work

CAIX-based therapy may be suitable for patients with:

01. Tracer Injection

A small amount of Technetium-99m Sestamibi tracer is injected into a vein.

02. Scanning

Multiple images will be taken for 3-4 hours. Abnormal parathyroid tissue retains the tracer longer than normal thyroid tissue.

03. Image Analysis

We will analyze the images to identify areas of persistent tracer uptake, indicating
a parathyroid adenoma.

04. Report Generated

A detailed report helps the endocrinologist or surgeon accurately plan treatment.
