A Safe, Reliable Way to Detect Lymphatic Blockages or Sentinel Nodes
Lymphoscintigraphy Scan in Bangalore
About Lymphoscintigraphy Scan
Lymphoscintigraphy is a nuclear medicine scan used to assess the lymphatic system, which helps drain fluid and fight infection. This scan helps detect blockages in lymphatic drainage, evaluate lymphoedema (limb swelling), or locate the sentinel lymph node (first lymph node to which cancer may spread).
It involves a small injection of a safe radiotracer (usually 99mTc-labeled Sulphur Colloid or Nanocolloid) just under the skin. A special gamma camera then takes images showing how the tracer moves through the lymphatic vessels.
Why Is This Scan Done
To Detect Lymphatic Obstruction or Lymphedema
Helps find out if swelling in arms or legs is due to lymph blockage.
To Locate Sentinel Lymph Node (in Cancer)
Especially in breast cancer, melanoma, penile, or vulvar cancers.
To Evaluate Congenital or Acquired Lymphatic Disorders
Commonly used in children or adults with unexplained limb swelling.
Pre-Surgical Planning
Helps surgeons identify nodes for biopsy or removal.
How Does the Scan Work
A tiny amount of 99m-Tc sulphur colloid/nanocolloid is injected just under the skin near the area of concern (e.g., foot for leg swelling, or near tumor for cancer mapping).
A gamma camera captures a series of images to track how the tracer moves through the lymphatic vessels over time (immediately and after a short delay).
The images show the pathways, blockages, or abnormal flow, and help localize sentinel nodes if it’s for cancer.
The report gives detailed information about the lymphatic function and drainage pattern.
Preparation for Lymphoscintigraphy Scan
You can eat and drink normally unless instructed otherwise.
To allow easy access for the injection and imaging.
Though the scan is safe, special precautions may be needed.
Especially helpful for cancer-related scans.
Is It Safe
Yes. The scan uses a very small and safe dose of radioactive tracer and has no side effects. It is a painless procedure, except for a tiny pinprick at the injection site.
Also, it is safe even in patients with kidney problems — no risk with altered renal function.
